PJ Turner is a renowned professional dancer based in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he lives with his wife Lisa and two daughters, Alyssa and Brianne. Born and raised in Knoxville, PJ has strong family ties in the area, including his parents and older brothers. He and Lisa, high school sweethearts, married young shortly after PJ became a father.
PJ’s career path has been diverse, encompassing roles in carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and appliance repair. He is truly a Jack of all trades, having once juggled three jobs to support his dance ambitions. PJ is recognized for his approachability and down-to-earth personality in the dance community, often seen wearing a backwards hat and a welcoming grin.
His dance journey began at age 10 with clogging, inspired by his brother’s line dancing stories. By 12, he was line dancing, and at 14, he began partner dancing, learning East Coast Swing and other dances from his future wife. PJ’s break came when he appeared on the national TV show “Club Dance,” which aired for three years and allowed his grandmother to see him dance, despite her illness. He then focused on West Coast Swing, which became his signature style.
PJ’s competitive dance career took off with his first event at Peach State in Atlanta. He later joined Team Joe, traveling across the Southeast U.S., teaching, and competing. PJ’s dedication paid off when he was crowned the NASDE tour Champion in 2012 and received several social dance awards. His partnership with Tashina Beckmann King led to multiple US Open finals and performances in the Off-Broadway show “Swango.”
In 2015, PJ transitioned to dancing full-time, a decision he cherishes. Today, he travels globally, teaching, judging, and performing, supported by his family who remains his greatest motivation. PJ’s motto, “Just make her smile,” encapsulates his approach both on and off the dance floor.
